4.30pm – 5.45pm BST, 24 July 2024 ‐ 1 hour 15 mins

Your organisation IS on a sustainability journey. And potentially on a business agility journey. But is it combining these two journeys to reap the real benefits? Join the movement! We're not living in times of change, we're living in change of times. Many reports show that for organisations to survive and thrive in these times, they not only need to be able to pivot, to adapt and learn, to bring value to their staff and of course their customers. But also that they need to care about social and ecological impact of themselves and their (complete) value chains, ensuring minimum negative impact and high value. Without a focus on sustainability, how can you be really providing value? Organisations need to become ever more sustainable, Socially sustainable, Ecologically Sustainable, Economically Sustainable. The journey to become more sustainable is a learning journey. Join greenprojectmanagement.org (GPM) , the not for profit think tank for sustainability, and Agile Business Consortium, the not for profit professional body for business agility, as they join forces to discuss the sustainable agile organisation. Combining the powers and insights of both, truly a magnificent opportunity. How does business agility support the sustainability journey? How does explicit focus on sustainability support the agility journey? The authors will share the insights from a White Paper they have authored. We want to start a movement in the agility world, to support sustainability. We want to start a movement in the sustainability world, to show agility is the way forward. Do you want to become part of this movement? Join us!

The planetary challenges like the climate crisis or equity and inclusion are asking for our attention. Yet, our work keeps us busy. So, what if we could for example reduce the carbon footprint of the product we are creating while developing it further? Or what if we could make our products more accessible and thus more beneficial for all? Luckily, more and more support for increasing environmental, social, and economic sustainability is available. For example, we can now pick the region for our cloud by e.g., specifying that carbon reduction is an important criterion for us. We can also focus on a persona spectrum instead of a single persona to make our product more inclusive. The questions are: Are we aware of the available support? How can we make use of it while developing a product? And what can we easily do (despite being busy)? In this session, I want to explore various practices that can help us increase environmental, social, and economic sustainability in product development. The focus is on simple changes to create better and more sustainable products.

Over my many years of working in Agile, I’ve seen a preponderance of ADHD, OCD, anxiety, Asperger's Syndrome, autism, Bipolar Disorder I and II, etc. Since Agile encourages teams to work together, these issues can create impediments — and sometimes a 50-foot wall — that keeps the team from growing, and even from simply functioning. With this workshop, you will learn how to work together effectively, making simple adjustments to make your team more inclusive. Come join me while we work together to answer questions and create more healthy Agile teams.

The talk is for those who are struggling to breakdown barriers in organisations and want to know that they are not alone with their struggles. Using a fictitious case study of a product development organisation (Magnum Opus), we will talk through the antipatterns that they are facing with an attempt to 'do' Agile. We want to try and disrupt the idea that organisational change has to be slow. The talk is designed to be at odds with many other conferences talks attended. It is rooted in empathy and humor, with anecdotes and audience participation to make it personal. It is a 'troublemaker' session, structured to disrupt the status quo that is present in many organisations by pointing out the stupidity (in many cases!) of process. Instead of focusing on goals, the 'Lies' that are talked about are system-focused i.e. consider the process rather than the aim, and only by changing the system can goals be purposely achieved.

Human communication is a complex process influenced by various factors in every interaction. Our emotions, ideas, and beliefs affect both what we say and what we leave unsaid. Can we collectively move beyond our assumptions, creating a willingness to learn from those with different viewpoints to us? Albert Einstein famously said: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking used when we created them”. We need to adopt different ways of thinking, listening and being with one another. In this interactive talk, I invite you to embark on an enlightening journey of exploring the rich tapestry of dialogue. We'll uncover the hidden treasures of genuine connection and open inquiry through thinking together.

One of the big problems the ‘Agile sector’ faces is scaling – what happens when either you try to use Agile approaches with multiple teams on say large mission critical engineering design projects, or where you try to bolt Agile approaches that work well at a team level to a large organisation run on traditional lines? The tensions both these scenarios create are painful for teams, their team members and the wider organisation and typically the tension can lead to the collapse of initiatives. This talk walks through how a well tried model from Systems Thinking – the Viable System Model (VSM) can be used to scale Agile. Applying VSM to the problem of scaling Agile showed up the systemic factors that commonly undermine initiatives and some ways those can be addressed. The approach developed forms the basis of a white paper published by the Agile Business Consortium.

Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change? Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice. Join this session to become a real influencer! Learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and get more successful results from them. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping and The Four Rs model from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick) to improve our conversational skills in order to be more influential without power. In the session you will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.

You are not simply your appearance, your role, your nationality, your age, your *insert label here*. We are so much more than the aggregate or the common denominator. There is no Us, without a sense of belonging. Culture is hard to define, yet we see ourselves tasked with influencing and changing the culture of a complex workplace made up of *gasp*... human beings! As we seek to gear actions to a whole, our propensity to judge and classify may lead to shortcuts that look past the wealth of individual complexities. This experiential and reflective workshop is intended to create some collective discomfort as we face our individual identities, connect to an ephemeral team, make our culture explicit, and architect culture intentionally to create a sense of belonging. Through this workshop, you’ll hopefully see yourself and others differently, and leave better equipped to formulate the change you intend to create. Heads up: I am bringing my whole self and providing an example of how What You See Is NOT What You Get.

Software today is built by teams. There may be brilliant individuals and genius coders but in my experience the best designs come from a process of collaboration, iteration and feedback. Across an organization of many teams working on the same codebase you need some consistency in approach and a common language for talking about design and improvements. Building team skill is an important consideration for agile leaders which often receives too little attention. Experienced software developers often work well with peers, but they also need to be able to share what they know and help the more junior people in their team to advance. Of course it’s always been part of a Scrum Master or Agile Coach role to encourage better teamwork and collaboration, but Technical coaching adds another dimension. The focus is not so much on the process and ceremonies of an agile method, but more about how the code is getting written. It’s about raising code quality, learning faster, and better handling the complexity of modern software development. A technical coach works with teams of developers, generally in larger organizations. It can be a full-time role, or a part of the work of tech leads and staff engineers. The focus of this work is to influence coding decisions, spread skills in teams and help people gain a better vocabulary for discussing design decisions. In this talk I’d like to explain what a technical coach actually does and how a technical coaching programme can help an organization to build a strong engineering culture and promote technical excellence. Livestreamed Manchester to Dallas.

User stories are one of the most visible artefacts of most agile methods and, as such, have generated large quantities of expert advice. In my experience, much of that advice is open to misinterpretation. In this session, we'll explore several classic pieces of advice, to see how misunderstandings can cause problems, despite the best intentions. The examples we'll look at are: - an acronym: INVEST, created by Bill Wake - a technique: relative estimation using story points, created by Ron Jeffries or Joseph Pelrine - a template: Connextra (As-A/I-Want/So-That), created by Rachel Davies Expert advice taken in good faith, that leads to bad outcomes, can cause us to become distrustful. It's time to reiterate that there is no magic formula, no silver bullet. At best, experts can lend you a framework within which to think, but their advice will never make thinking unnecessary.

From May to December 2019 we worked with BMW in South Africa to build their first end to end Online sales website for BMW globally. 75 people and 9 teams delivered across 3 countries, a website that went live in January 2020 - where a customer can buy, trade in and book a test drive without leaving their lounge. Amazing timing considering the impact of Covid. Why did they approach us? There was a clear deadline and a lot of global visibility for this initiative but the team had not been able to get traction, or really get started for 6 months – they worked in silos aligned to traditional hierarchy. We introduced a new way of working aligned to Agile and Scrum principles. This experience taught us that a successful Business Agility transformation is simply about 3 steps... 1. Business & IT leadership in it together 2. The Value stream that put the customer first 3. A Culture that embraces collaboration We had to get rid of the blame game and all accept we were in the same boat, even when it was sinking. This required a huge shift in BMW's culture, which is build around hierarchy, competition and individual success.

How many of us have found ourselves on a team of people who create healthy culture with one another, but find yourself saying things like "yeah, WE all acknowledge what WE need to change, but what about the bigger problems here?" Toxic senior leaders, non-valuable processes, a total lack of diversity, and PIZZA as a thank you for backbreaking work? Enough already! Join me for a talk about how we can approach leadership in a different way that starts with actionable self-awareness. We'll start with some introspection using tools like The Responsibility Process and Cycles of Mistrust to ground us in the reality of how we show up. Do you know your own stress triggers? Your biases in your ecosystems? Your blind spots? What do you want to change more than anything else? This talk is for anyone who ever felt unheard in their organization. This is for anyone who doesn't accept that "it is what it is" and that cultural improvement is possible. Whether you're entry level or CEO, you'll walk away with some concrete ideas on how to experiment within your own world and discover for yourself where you can improve not only your own life, but the lives of everyone you work with. The way to up our game in the ever-changing world of tech can't start with tech itself - it has to start with our own behavior.

Are you familiar with organizational transformations that didn't meet expectations? Whether you've experienced one or are gearing up to lead such an initiative, join us as we share the journey of embracing agile from scratch. This talk sheds light on successful practices and provides insights from our missteps in navigating organizational change. Throughout the presentation, we'll explore various leadership stages, from self-awareness to team dynamics and relationship-building during the change. While you'll recognize the shift towards an agile organization - moving from functional to product teams, prioritizing quality, and learning from failure - the real insights emerge from handling resistance, tailored transparency, and the shift to proactive mindsets across the entire technology organization. We'll share examples of resistance encountered, including the lack of compelling reason for change, time constraints for learning, fear of losing authority, "us vs them" dynamics, and the entrenched "this is how it was always done" mindset. Real-world context and actionable leadership practices will show how to overcome these challenges for leaders navigating organizational transformations.

Back in 2019 my client required that I read "Project to Product" by Mik Kersten before I was allowed to coach the organization. I listened to the audio, organized my thoughts, and said to the client "ok, I 'read' the book. Given your current state there's lots you aren't doing that the book suggest you should do." There response: "Oh, we read the book too. We didn't really understand what we needed to do. We were hoping you would explain it to us." And with that, my first of four to come project to product transformations began. And after having four under my belt, I have started to see patterns and repeatable steps to get going on this powerful journey. In this session, I will show you what project to product means, why it is so important, and then I'll share highly actionable steps to get moving on the journey! You will leave thinking, wow, I know what I need to do now! We will cover how to identify your products, and why this is so hard for many organizations. We will look at the difference between temporary agile teams and persistent ones, why that matters, and how product thinking will help you create more stable teams. And we'll touch on how funding works as well. We will also look at one of the biggest antipatterns I've seen in the agile industry: Epics, Features and Stories (or Initiatives, Epics and Stories if you prefer) that are really just work breakdown structures, not Value Delivery Structures. More simply: do your features (jira epics) represent actual product features? Or just a box of stories. Do the names sound like value? Or do they sound like actions the team has to take? Historically I see a lot of task-sounding features and stories instead of nuggets of value. We will also look at this pattern and how to correct it using product thinking.

While the agile world often preaches the mantra of "failing fast", how often do we truly embrace the concept of "failing well"? Every failure isn't just an end but can be a powerful beginning – if only we understand its nuances and leverage it. For leaders, comprehending the different shades of failure is key to creating a psychologically safe environment where constructive failure is identified, accepted, and learned from. In this session, we'll journey through the diverse categories of failure, understand their implications, and empower you with practical tools to design effective experiments. Crafting good experiments isn't about avoiding failure but harnessing it. It's time to evolve from merely failing fast to failing well.

An agile organisation is an intelligent organisation. In this workshop we will be learning how to build more agile organisations using the study of intelligence - Cognitive Science. Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary field studying intelligence and mind. It takes findings from Psychology, Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, Anthropology and Linguistics to build a picture of what a mind is, and how intelligence works in a complex and dynamic world. It is full of fascinating and relatable insights about how we come to understand the world around us, evaluate options, and choose the best ones for the situation at hand. Our teams and organisations are also trying to solve problems in a complex world, however some of our innate personal intelligence is lost behind the structures and patterns that we create when we problem solve together. If we can understand intelligence through the lenses of Cognitive Science, we can understand how to build better organisations. This talk is for leaders, agility practitioners, and anyone with experience trying to build a great organisation or team. Whether you're looking to find even more greatness, or put out a flaming dumpster fire, there will be something in this workshop for you. This practical-focussed session will show you how simple tools based in Cognitive Science can help you with pragmatic and wise problem solving. We will introduce the core concepts from Cognitive Science and use them to learn: - an overarching framing for how to think about building an intelligent organisation, using the 4 Es of Cognitive Science - Practical tools for helping your teams to identify areas of improvement and become more intelligent

While general statistics, such as the WHO's estimate that 1 in 7 people have a disability suggest a lower prevalence of disabilities in the workforce, even one excluded team member can significantly impact team dynamics. This session addresses the necessity of accessibility-friendly sessions for Agile teams, considering various challenges such as visual and auditory impairments, physical mobility, light sensitivity, neurodiversity, and speech difficulties. Practical applications and approaches: Blindness/Substantial Visual impairment accommodations - To optimize for those using screen readers/text-to-speech, how do you set up a visual board/layout in a tool like Miro? How do you structure the data appropriately? Is it appropriate to create a text-based document as a companion to the board? Use alt-text in images, use header tags in text. Have a link strategy (describe where the links go before providing the link). Have people identify themselves every time they speak. Use an icebreaker where people physically describe themselves in words. Offer transcriptions for audio resources, captions/subtitles for video. Other visual impairment / Color Blindness / Light Sensitivity/ Seizure / dyslexia / ADHD accommodations (color schemes and/or fonts/typeface to avoid, being thoughtful of color/contrast choices, maximize focus, minimize distractions for motion sensitivities). Auditory impairment accommodations (closed captioning, ASL interpretation for large audience). Discuss use of Talktrack (record an ASL interpretation and is Talktrack compatible with screen readers or have simultaneous closed captions) Physical accommodations (ensure they have access to assistive devices if they cannot use keyboard/mouse). If including interactive activities, ensure they don’t require speed or long duration and are as simple as possible. Neurodiversity accommodations - Good news - remote work can help/reduce stress in those needing neurodiverse accommodations. However it may be appropriate to use structured communication/clear and well written instructions, visual cues/aids such as schedules/agendas and other easy to understand graphics, flexible breaks, accommodations around sensitivities involving light and/or noise, ensure they have advance training on the tool you are using to minimize stress. Speech accommodations - provide alternate ways to participate in sessions that may not be verbal (brain writing exercises, etc). Livestreamed Dallas to Manchester.
